What is a dessert table?
Updated on
A decorated table of desserts and sweets in small portions, set up as a focal point and offered at the end of an event.
A dessert table (mesa dulce in Spanish) is a table of desserts and sweets in small portions, set up and decorated as a focal point and offered at the end of an event or to close a drinks reception. In dessert table catering, the table is made up of individual bites: mini tarts, brownies, macarons, dessert pots, fruit, biscuits or pastries. When it is mostly sweets, it is often called a candy bar.
What it is used for at a corporate event
It closes the event on a pleasant, photogenic note. It can stand in for a seated dessert at a drinks reception or a standing lunch, offers a range of flavours and keeps attendees happy without dragging out the service. Because the pieces are individual, everyone helps themselves to what they like and nothing needs cutting or handing round. It helps to mix flavours (chocolate, fruit, cream, something citrusy) and to flag the ingredients of each piece, especially if there are allergens to declare.
Approximate quantities
The calculator in our price guide counts 2 sweet pieces per person at a reception that replaces a meal: for 50 guests, about 100 pieces. Use it as a rough starting point for sizing the table; for a wider range of flavours, spread that figure across more items.
How it differs from related terms
- Unlike dessert at a seated menu, it is not plated or served at the table.
- Unlike a buffet, it holds desserts only.
- It combines well with a live food station or with the finger food of a reception.
