What is finger food?

Updated on

Food designed to be eaten with the fingers: small bites that need no cutlery or plate and are enjoyed standing up.

Finger food is food designed to be eaten with the fingers: small bites of one or two mouthfuls that need no cutlery or plate and are easy to eat standing up. In Spain the English term has become the standard name for the food at drinks receptions and standing events.

What it is used for at a corporate event

It lets people eat without breaking off a conversation, with no tables or cutlery in the way and plenty of variety. That is why it is the backbone of drinks receptions, standing lunches and product presentations. The bites can be cold, hot or sweet: mini sandwiches, croquettes, skewers, mini tacos, puff pastry bites or spoon bites. Because the portions are small and individual, each guest can try several things without committing to a whole dish, and it is easy to offer vegetarian or vegan alternatives alongside the rest.

Approximate quantities

When finger food replaces a meal, the calculator in our price guide works on 5 cold savoury pieces per person, 5 hot ones, 2 heartier bites (a mini burger, a mini tortilla, a spoon bite) and 2 sweet ones. That sits at the cautious end of the 12 to 15 savoury pieces that industry guides work with, so treat it as a guideline only.

  • A canapé is one specific type of finger food, served on a base of bread or similar; finger food covers any bite eaten with the fingers.
  • Unlike a seated menu, there is no plating and no cutlery.
  • Unlike a buffet, the portions are individual and smaller.
  • If the bites are finished in front of guests, the reception gains a live food station or live cooking.
