What is a vino español? The Spanish wine reception
Updated on
A standing reception with wine, other drinks and light nibbles, offered to mark an event, usually at the end of a conference, presentation or opening.
In Spain, a vino español (literally “Spanish wine”) is not a bottle but a standing reception at which wine, other drinks and light nibbles are served to mark an event such as a conference, a presentation, an opening or an awards ceremony: it is how Spain serves Spanish wine for events. It is usually served once the formal part is over; guests have a glass, something to eat and a chat.
What it is used for at a corporate event
It is a simple, relaxed way to close: it lets you thank people for coming, gets guests talking to each other and keeps the conversation going a little longer without laying on a meal. In our corporate catering we offer it as a light format with nibbles, ideal for rounding off conferences, product presentations or openings in style.
What it usually includes
A selection of wines and other drinks, with light cold and hot bites: boards of cheese or Iberian cured meats, canapés, tortilla, croquettes or skewers. It is served standing up, in the same room as the event or in an adjoining area. It is normally scheduled for the end, when the formal part finishes, and lasts around an hour. It is worth providing alcohol-free options and water for anyone who does not drink, and flagging the allergens in each bite.
How it differs from other formats
- Unlike a welcome cocktail, which opens the event, the vino español is usually offered at the end.
- Unlike a standing lunch, it does not replace a meal: it is just nibbles.
- The bites are canapés and finger food; if you need something more substantial, we switch to a buffet.
An informal end-of-day gathering with drinks and nibbles is an afterwork.
