What is vegan catering?
Updated on
A catering service whose dishes contain no animal-derived ingredients: no meat, fish, dairy, eggs or honey.
Vegan catering is event catering whose dishes contain no animal-derived ingredients: no meat, fish, shellfish, dairy, eggs or honey. It differs from vegetarian catering, which excludes meat and fish but can include dairy and eggs.
What is usually served
At a drinks reception or a finger food spread, typical vegan options include hummus with crudités, vegetable skewers, spring rolls, mini vegetable samosas, salads with pulses, and fruit or fruit-based desserts. Our delivery menu has vegan dishes, such as vegan spring rolls with sweet chilli sauce; you will find the details on our catering delivery page.
What to watch for at an event
- Hidden ingredients: sauces, puff pastry or stocks made with butter, egg or gelatine.
- Cross-contamination: serving on the same tray or with the same tongs as other dishes.
- Clear labelling: mark which pieces are vegan, as you would with allergens.
- Enough of it: the vegan options should not run out before the rest.
Other common diets
Many groups combine several diets, so ask about them in advance. See also gluten-free catering, halal catering and kosher catering.
